Eight Cal South teams claim regional championships
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (June 27, 2010) – Teams and sidelines erupted after today's victories. Winners were crowned 2010 US Youth Soccer Region IV Champions and the Under-14 through Under-19 champions have earned a berth to the US Youth Soccer National Championship July 20-25 in Overland Park, Kan., at Overland Park Soccer Complex.
With four defending champions making their way to the finals, the Under-19 Boys WSM Internationals (OR) was the only team to successfully defend their title, marking back-to-back regional championships.

Notes from today's matches…
Under-12 Girls
The Under-12 Girls championship between Arsenal FC (CA-S) and Real Colorado Nationals was knotted 1-1 with goals from Arsenal's Marissa Everett in the 39th minute and Real's Jayne Lydiatt in 60th minute. Playing through overtime, the game was still tied and finally determined by kicks from the mark where Arsenal prevailed 3-0.
Under-13 Girls
The Under-13 Girls San Diego Surf White (CA-S) and Leahi 97 Premier (HI) were at a 1-1 stand still after Haley Bruce's 62nd minute Surf goal and Nycole Mitsuyasu's 69th minute Leahi goal. With no results produced in overtime, the game went to PKs where Surf won 3-2.
Under-14 Girls
Two California North teams went head-to-head in the Under-14 Girls championship final, Foothill MVLA Lightening and Mustang Fury. Caitlyn Wong gave MVLA the halftime lead with a 35th minute goal and Gabriella Kaplan and Jaye Boissiere netted 54th and 62nd minute goals for the 3-0 MLVA upper hand. MVLA remained in control for their first regional championship title.
Under-15 Girls
Going into the finals match, Under-15 Girls Real Colorado National knew they were up against a tough opponent in Cal North's Mustang Blast. The Blast had one with a clear mission – defend their regional title and advance to nationals where they would continue on their quest for back-to-back national championships. Phyllis Anthony of Real netted a 25th minute goal for the 1-0 lead over Blast. In the second half, Rachel Feldman and Alexa Vandevanter gave Blast the 2-1 lead with 56th and 61st minute goals. Real refused to fall to the reigning champions and regained the lead with 71st and 80th minute goals from Stella Norman and Janine Beckie for the win.
Under-16 Girls
Cal South's Legends FC Under-16 Girls took a 2nd minute 1-0 lead over Colorado Rush Nike with an Alexa Bustamante goal. Rush kept their focus and Lindsey Horan tied the game at 1-1 in the 34th minute. Looking to secure the victory and trip to the nationals, Rush's Mary Schwappach found the back of the net in the 59th minute. Rush held onto the 2-1 lead to earn their first trip to nationals.
Under-17 Girls
The Under-17 Girls final featured the reigning national champion, De Anza Force 92 Blue of Cal North against Real So Cal White. Bridget Berman game Real the 25th minute 1-0 lead. Neither team was able to finish and Real marked the 1-0 win for advancement where they will compete against the nation's top teams.
Under-18 Girls
Cal South's Laguna Hills Eclipse Under-18 Girls is stacked with 12 players, all committed to play at the collegiate level. Looking to use that talent to earn a trip to nationals, Eclipse went up 1-0 over Storm Academy Copa of Colorado with a Monique Escalera goal. Bailey Marquez extended Laguna's lead with a 57th minute goal. Laguna looked to have the 2-0 win under their belt until the 90th minute when Storm's Nicholette Digiacomo challenged that lead, but the game ended 2-1 in Laguna's favor.
Under-19 Girls
The Under-19 Girls championship match between Cal North's South Alameda County Northstars and Cal South's Slammer's FC was not easily decided. Northstars' Alexis Tershay scored in the 78th minute and Slammers' Mia Bruno tied it up in the 87th minute, sending the game into overtime. Micaela Castain put one up in the 112th minute and Tershay found her second goal of the game in the 115th minute for Northstars to be called 2010 Region IV Champions.
Under-12 Boys
Santa Barbara SC (CA-S) Under-12 Boys made their objective known in the finals match against Arsenal Colorado Gold with a 4th minute Shea Blackman goal. Jacob Black hit a 30th minute Santa Barbara goal with teammate Francisco Arroyo following up with another five minutes later. Santa Barbara won 3-0.
Under-13 Boys
LAFC Chelsea (CA-S)and FC Las Vegas (NV) were tied 1-1 at the half after Phillip Hopper's 27th minute FC Las Vegas goals and Bradford Jamieson's 35th minute LAFC goal. LAFC pulled into the lead with Hugo Gutierrez and Danie Crisostomo goals in the 45th and 64th minutes. Jamieson and FC Las Vegas' Sergio Borboa both scored in the 70th minute. LAFC won 4-2.
Under-14 Boys
The Under-14 Boys WSM Galacticos (OR) opened with a 23rd minute Rubin Mendez goal, but Washington's Crossfire Premier countered with a 37th minute Matthew Poplawski goal for the 1-1 halftime knot. Jillian White upped Crossfire's lead with a 51st minute goal. In their third appearance at regionals, Crossfire held tight for the 2-1 victory to earn their first trip to the National Championships.
Under-15 Boys
Scoring in the first five minutes of the game, Isreal Escalera put Mt. Hamilton PAC Tigers of Cal North on the board in the finals match against Boise Nationals Barcelona (ID). In the 65th minute, Escalera posted his second goal of the game for the 2-0 lead and final score. 2010 will mark PAC's first trip to nationals.
Under-16 Boys
Reigning Region IV champion, Under-16 Boys Sereno 94 White (AZ), made it clear they were out to keep their title when Andrew Wall netted a first minute goals against Cal South's Slammers FC. John McBean tied the game 1-1 for Slammers with his 13th minute goal, and after the half, Cameron Waymire put Slammers in the lead, 2-1. McBean went on to complete a hat trick with 51st and 77th minute goals, and Ethan Morrow wrapped up the 5-1 Slammers win with an 80th minute goal, adding Region IV champion to the Slammers' resume.
Under-17 Boys
Local fans of the New Mexico's Under-17 Boys Elite FC Gladiators filled the sidelines, looking to cheer them to a victory over Cal South's West Coast FC. The Gladiators were the first to find a scoring opportunity in the 63rd minute thanks to Nathanael Pacheco. Gladiators looked to hold that 1-0 lead through to the end, but West Coast had other plans with Guillermo Licona netting an 85th minute goal for the 1-1 tie. The game played out through overtime and went to kick from the mark where West Coast came out on top, 5-4 for the win.
Under-18 Boys
Utah's Inter FC set the pace of the Under-18 Boys championship final when Ian Ramos posted goals in the 12th and 25th minutes against Oregon's ESUFC 91 Liverpool Red. Inter FC kept the 2-0 advantage until the 73rd minute when Steven Hughes put ESUFC on the board. An 89th minute ESUFC goal from Connor Valenter tied the game, sending it into overtime where Valenter completed a hat trick for the 4-2 ESUFC win.
Under-19 Boys
In their final year of playing youth soccer, the Under-19 Boys WSM Internationals were looking for a win in the Region IV Championship finals to go out with a bang, slating back-to-back regional championships. WSM met their match in New Mexico's Rush Red Star, unable to score until Joseph Sleven's 46th minute goal. Sleven followed up with a second in the 53rd for the 2-0 WSM lead. Rush's Robert Ward netted one in the 65th minute to challenge the WSM lead, but the reigning regional champions held tight to the 2-1 lead to earn a return trip the National Championships where they will compete for the James P. McGuire Cup on its 75th anniversary.
