US Youth Soccer Region IV Champions To Be Crowned Tomorrow
Tickets to the National Championships On the Line

LAS VEGAS (June 23, 2007)
– Thirty-two teams, representing seven of the 14 states in Region IV, remained in the hunt to be crowned US Youth Soccer Region IV Champions and advance to the National Championships in Frisco, Texas. Finals will begin tomorrow at 7 a.m. at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex in Las Vegas.

Teams represented in tomorrow’s finals include 17 California South teams, five California North, three Oregon, two Washington, two Arizona, two Colorado and one local team from host Nevada.

California South’s Slammers worked hard today to gain a spot in the Under-18 Girls final. Going up against Real Colorado Nationals in overtime, the Slammer’s Ashlee Elliott was able to take advantage of an opportunity and find the back of the net. “This is the epic of all things,” said assistant Slammers coach Walid Rahoury after the match. “We are one game away from going to the national championships.”

Coach Ziad Rahoury was also impressed with the girl’s play, “The first half was 50-50, but the girls created many chances in the second half. Our strategy was to break them wide and divide to get in crosses. Real Colorado was well organized in the back with four across and we were able to use the crosses to make opportunities. The last 15 minutes we tried to hold them with our defense.”

Under-18 Boys Arsenal scared their fans and coaches today as the game needed an overtime to determine the winner after a 1-1 tie in regulation.  Arsenal’ Hector Jimenez had the first hit off of a free kick. It wasn’t until the final 15 minutes when Las Vegas’ own Las Vegas Premier 89, scored off a penalty kick to tie giving over 650 local fans something to cheer about. That was the first goal Arsenal has given up during this year’s regional championships.

Going into overtime the Premier were down two players and a coach due to red cards but kept the game going. Arsenal had only been playing 11 due to injuries and two and a half ours in the Las Vegas heat was taking its toll. In overtime, Arsenal’s Rafael Garcia scored early to give them the lead. Later in overtime, Danny Rodriguez found the back of the net again to clench Arsenal’s place in tomorrow’s finals and keep the dream of four consecutive national titles for another day.  Arsenal will face Colorado Rush Nike at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow.

The Under-17 Boys Real Colorado Nationals will be one of two Colorado teams advancing to tomorrow’s games. They won against Arizona’s Gilbert Arsenal, 2-0. Jacob Fronapfel (33:00) and Taylor Kemp (51:00) both scored to help their team on to the finals. Real’s coach Loren Donaldson said, “The tournament is a long tournament and usually the team that possesses the ball usually wins.”

When asked about their final game, Donaldson said, “We played the Surf in the first round and tied 1-1. It was one of the better games in the tournament. Surf is a great team; they have a lot of big name players. I think it is going to be a good game because they are a great team.”

Complete scores from today’s action are below.

More than 250 top boys and girls US Youth Soccer teams from 14 state associations are competing for the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships, June 18-24, at Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex and the Kellogg Zaher Sports Complex in Las Vegas.
