LAS VEGAS (June 18, 2007)
– Evening games concluded day one of preliminary matches at the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex and the Kellogg Zaher Sport Complex in Las Vegas. Round robin matches continue tomorrow and Wednesday.

The Under-17 Girls Eagles (California South) are back at the US Youth Soccer Region IV Championships after a national championship win in 2004. The last two years, the Eagles have lost in the California South US Youth Soccer State Championships finals match in penalty kicks against San Diego Surf. With five of their players going to college in the fall, the 2007 championships have increased importance. Today, they beat the Alaska Rush 3-0 by refocusing and being more assertive in the second half.

The Under-16 Boys West Valley United Dragons have been preparing for the Region IV championships since they won the Arizona US Youth Soccer State Championships. Their captains kept their team focused and their hard work paid off this evening as they won 4-2 against the Vegas Vengeance Cosmos (Nevada).

Utah's Avalanche Premier upset the Slammers FC (California South) this evening, 3-2. The Under-18 Slammers entered the tournament as a wildcard. Two more days of play will determine if they can earn their way to Friday?s quarterfinals.

Again tomorrow the game times will be split. Morning games will start at 7 a.m. with the final morning games starting at 1 p.m. Evening games will be played at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at both complexes.
