ORLANDO,
FL (July 27, 2005)
– The evening matches of the US Youth Soccer National
Championships concluded today with Preliminary Round play in the
Under-19 boys and girls divisions as well as the Under-16 boys
at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.
Playing
for the oldest trophy in youth sport, the James P. McGuire Cup,
the Under-19 boys division got off to a passionate start as each
of the regional champions took their respective fields with a
singular thought – play their best soccer.
David Bell and Ryan Roushandel contributed with two goals
each to give Atlanta Fire United (GA) the win over Reston FC
(VA), 4-0.
“We
came in pretty on. We
are the only team that’s been here before.
We’ve been here four times,” said Coach Massoud
Roushandel. “It’s
huge getting ahead early at Nationals.
Getting the first game is even bigger because then you
know one more win puts you in the final.”
The
Sockers FC (IL) took the win after Dirk
Pearson slotted one home in the 87th to give their
side the 1-0 win over Nomads SC (CA-S).
In
the Under-16 boys play the Arsenal FC (CA), 2004 National
Champions, wasted no time, getting on the scoreboard early
against the FC Delco Black V (PA) with Gerson
Mayen’s goal at the 17 minute mark. The effort was rewarded
with Max Allen’s go-ahead goal in the 78th minute
and Ryan Peterman’s finisher in the 79th minute.
In
a 3-1 victory over Vardar (MI), the Solar 89 SC Under-16 Boys
(TX) opened with a goal by Ian Smith (13th minute)
only to have Bobby Merrit of Vardar retaliate quickly within the
next minute. It only took David Reyes sixty seconds to break the
tie and Solar held on from there.
“We
played very conservative and stayed back in the first half,”
said Solar Coach Kevin Smith, “We dropped our guard and let a
goal in.”
“Cameron
Brown had a good game, Chris Schneider was great in the air,
they’re very good leaders. Our goalkeeper played
another fine match, he was solid,” claimed Smith.
The
2005 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, providing
approximately 129,000 players on 7,200 teams from US Youth
Soccer’s 55 State Associations the opportunity to showcase
their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation
while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play, is the
country’s most prestigious national youth soccer tournament.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships cap a yearlong
series of competitions for boys and girls teams in multiple age
brackets.
2005
marks a special year for the four teams in the Under-19 Boys age
group at the US Youth Soccer National Championship as the
National Champion will hoist the James P. McGuire Cup, the
oldest trophy in youth sport dating back to 1935 with the
inaugural youth championships, on the 70th anniversary of the
storied cup. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the
Under-19 Girls Ross Stewart Cup and 20th Anniversary of the
Under-16 Girls Patricia L. Masotto Cup. The U.S. Soccer
Federation initiated youth championships with the James P.
McGuire Cup (Under-19 Boys) in 1935. Since its creation in 1974,
US Youth Soccer has added 11 divisions to the National
Championship tournament, most recently with the Under-14 and
Under-15 Boys and Girls divisions in 2001 to create the series
current format.
Annually
the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series provides the
nation’s top collegiate coaches with the premier stage to
identify and scout the most coveted players in the country. In
2004, over 500 coaches attended the US Youth Soccer Regional
Championships including the majority of the top 25 men’s and
women’s programs based on the final 2004 NSCAA/adidas National
Rankings for NCAA Division I schools.
Play
resumes tomorrow morning at 7:30am with action in the Under-18
boys and girls divisions as well as the Under-15 girls.
