ORLANDO,
FL (July 31, 2005)
– US Youth Soccer National Champions were crowned today at
Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex where the top 48 teams
in the country met to conclude the final challenge of the 2005
US Youth Soccer National Championship Series.
By advancing through their state and regional
competitions the final two teams in each age group, Under-14
through Under-19 boys and girls, earned their way to play for
the National Championship of youth soccer.
Hoisting
the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest youth sports trophy in the
country, on the 70th anniversary of the Under-19 Boys
National Championship was the Sockers FC of Illinois.
At the conclusion of regulation the score was knotted at
one goal each. In
the overtime period Paul Mongillo (Sockers) played a great ball
past the keeper to claim the title.
“Our
guy hit a shot of a lifetime,” Sockers FC Chicago (IL)
Under-19 Boys, Coach David Richardson.
“It had to be a great goal to beat these guys.”
Extra
time wasn’t enough to determine the Ross Stewart Cup, Under-19
Girls title, as the Stars of Massachusetts (MA) and the Dallas
Texans Red 86 (TX-N) went to penalty kicks after a
back-and-forth game that concluded 3:3.
Stars keeper Brett Maron made two great saves and her
teammates took care of the rest hitting four of four shots to
outlast the Texans 4:3.
The
2004 defending National Champions, Arsenal FC (CA-S), needed a
goal from Hector Jimenez in the 100th minute to break
the 1:1 tie with Solar SC 89 (TX-N) for the repeat and the D.J.
Niotis Cup awarded to the Under-16 Boys National Champion.
“Everyone
is out to get you which makes winning the second time more
difficult than the first,” said Arsenal FC coach Steve Lucey.
“I’m very excited, two years in a row, I think that
qualifies as a dynasty, doesn’t it?”
The
Laura Moynihan Cup, awarded to the Under-17 Girls National
Champion, belongs to the Eclipse Select (IL) Under-17 Girls
team, the only other defending champions, who avenged an earlier
loss to the PDA Wildcats (NJ).
SCORES?
“We
made adjustments and our big-time players put balls in,” said
Eclipse coach Mike Nesci. “The hardest thing to do is to
repeat as a champion, the only thing harder is to be considered
the best US Youth Soccer team to have ever played.”
In
the Under-14 boys division, US Youth Soccer National Cup, So Cal
United (CA-S) defeated the Chicago Magic (IL) in penalty kicks
(5:3) after a scoreless tie through two overtimes.
“It
was nerve-wracking. I can’t say the right words to express my
feelings,” said So Cal goalkeeper Elmer Avelar on his save in
penalties. “It’s the most amazing thing that has happened to
me in the world.”
The
So Cal Blues (CA) Under-14 Girls had a storybook ending to their
Elmer Ehlers Cup run,
defeating the Edmond Soccer Club 91 Black (OK) 3:2. Charney
Burk, with only forty seconds left in the game, broke passed an
Edmond defender on the left side and booted a shot to the
upper-corner for the win.
Michael
Bustamante of the FC Greater Boston Bolts (MA) Under-15 Boys
team scored two goals, including the game-winner in the 100th
minute of the second overtime, to help his team outlast 89 CASL
Elite (NC) in a 5:4 shootout to claim the adidas®
Cup.
“I
have no words,” said, Michael Bustamante (Bolts).
Bustamante was awarded the adidas®
Golden Boot and Golden Glove awards are presented to the players
with the most competitive impact to their team.
“I wasn’t expecting the adidas® Golden Boot,
it was a total surprise and totally unexpected.”
Freddy Adu won the adidas Golden Boot in 2001, too see

For
the Under-15 Girls of the St. Louis Soccer Club, Amelia Beger
jumped higher than the pack for the header in the 80th
minute to claim the Kristine Lilly Cup
over PDA Power, 1:0.
Though
the Slammers FC (CA-s) Under-16 Girls were stunned by an early
goal from Katherine Sheeleigh of the PDA Fury (NJ) in the third
minute, the Slammers remained composed and retaliated two
minutes later with one of two goals on the day from Jessica
Gordon (Slammers). With
momentum on their side, the Slammers held on to the lead,
winning the Patricia L.
Masotto Cup (4:1).
The
Dallas Texans 88 Red (TX) Under-17 boys reigned supreme to win
the Don Greer Cup over Real Colorado National (CO), 3:0.
“This
feels wonderful,” said Dallas Texans Red (TX) Under-17 Boys
Coach David Hudgell. “They’re
a great group of guys who worked extremely hard.
It was a strong team performance.”
Continuing
with a strong team performance was the Dallas Texans 87 Red
(TX-N) Under-18 Boys who used a dominating backline to defeat
the PDA Conquistadors (NJ), 3:0 and claim the Andy Stone Cup.
“We
lost to this team earlier in the tournament,” said Coach
Hudgell who also won the title in the Under-17 Boys final.
“This is great, winning the National Championship just
two weeks before they go off to college.
They deserve it.”
The
Laguna Hills Eclipse won the Under-18 Girls Frances J.
“Frank” Kelly Cup by a score of 4:3 over Bethesda Excel (MD)
in a game determined by two overtime periods. The Eclipse's
Michelle Enyeart had two goals on the day, which included
her game-winner at the 110-minute mark.
The
2005 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, providing
more than 129,000 players on over 7,200 teams from US Youth
Soccer’s 55 State Associations the opportunity to showcase
their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation
while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play, is the
country’s most prestigious national youth soccer tournament.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships cap a yearlong
series of competitions for boys and girls teams in multiple age
brackets.
2005
marks a special year for the four teams in the Under-19 Boys age
group at the US Youth Soccer National Championship as the
National Champion will hoist the James P. McGuire Cup, the
oldest trophy in youth sport dating back to 1935 with the
inaugural youth championships, on the 70th anniversary of the
storied cup. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the
Under-19 Girls Ross Stewart Cup and 20th Anniversary of the
Under-16 Girls Patricia L. Masotto Cup. The U.S. Soccer
Federation initiated youth championships with the James P.
McGuire Cup (Under-19 Boys) in 1935. Since its creation in 1974,
US Youth Soccer has added 11 divisions to the National
Championship tournament, most recently with the Under-14 and
Under-15 Boys and Girls divisions in 2001 to create the series
current format.
Annually
the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series provides the
nation’s top collegiate coaches with the premier stage to
identify and scout the most coveted players in the country. In
2004, over 500 coaches attended the US Youth Soccer Regional
Championships including the majority of the top 25 men’s and
women’s programs based on the final 2004 NSCAA/adidas National
Rankings for NCAA Division I schools.
