ORLANDO,
FL (July 30, 2005)
– What began Friday night, ended early Saturday morning as the
7:00pm matches of the US Youth Soccer National Championships
were delayed three hours due to severe weather.
PDA
Conquistadors (NJ) will square off against the Dallas Texans Red
87 in the Under-18 Boys National Championship final on Sunday at
after both teams earned the right to compete for the Andy Stone
Cup tonight with wins over Real Colorado National (2:0) and FC
Milwaukee (3:1) respectively.
PDA scored two goals in the first 15 minutes of play and
held on from there.
“We
feel the two best teams (in the country) are here in the
final,” said PDA coach John Murphy. “We’ll get some rest
tomorrow and be ready to play for the National Championship on
Sunday.”
“We’re
just thrilled, the National Championship is our goal,” said
PDA sweeper Ryan Adelye. “It’s
a way of living and whatever needs to be done, we’ll do.”
In
the Texans match, FC Milwaukee held on to a 1:0 lead through the
first half of play. The
Texans appeared to be on a downward spiral until the second half
where an inspired side found the back of the net and some much
needed momentum to score three unanswered goals and finish with
the 3:1 win.
“We
had a bad momentum swing,” said Texans’ Christopher
Clements. “We had
to dig deep and each player contributed big-time.
We’re ready to play them (PDA) again!”
Bethesda
Excel (MD) needed a win tonight to clinch their slot in the
Under-18 Girls National Championship.
As time ran down late into the second half Bethesda’s
Hayley Siegal found a seam and made the most of the opportunity
scoring in the 72nd minute of play to give her side
the one-point advantage. Teammate
Amanda Poach added another five minutes later to confirm
Bethesda’s reservation for Sunday’s final with the 2:0 win.
The
89 CASL Elite (NC) and Nomads SC (CA) knew tonight’s match
would dictate the other’s future as the winner would advance
to play for the adidas Cup awarded to the Under-15 Boys National
Champion. After
both sides exchanged goals, CASL’s Conor Byrne added another
in the 54th and teammate Shawn Guderian scored his
second of the night in the 65th for the 3:1 lead.
The Nomads would make a charge late with Henock Snook’s
second goal of the night in the 80th but CASL would
hold the advantage and advance with the 3:2 to face the Boston
Bolts in the final.
Play
resumes Sunday at 7:30am beginning with the Under-14 Boys
National Championship.
The
2005 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, providing
approximately 129,000 players on 7,200 teams from US Youth
Soccer’s 55 State Associations the opportunity to showcase
their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation
while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play, is the
country’s most prestigious national youth soccer tournament.
The US Youth Soccer National Championships cap a yearlong series
of competitions for boys and girls teams in multiple age
brackets.
2005
marks a special year for the four teams in the Under-19 Boys age
group at the US Youth Soccer National Championship as the
National Champion will hoist the James P. McGuire Cup, the
oldest trophy in youth sport dating back to 1935 with the
inaugural youth championships, on the 70th anniversary of the
storied cup. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the
Under-19 Girls Ross Stewart Cup and 20th Anniversary of the
Under-16 Girls Patricia L. Masotto Cup. The U.S. Soccer
Federation initiated youth championships with the James P.
McGuire Cup (Under-19 Boys) in 1935. Since its creation in 1974,
US Youth Soccer has added 11 divisions to the National
Championship tournament, most recently with the Under-14 and
Under-15 Boys and Girls divisions in 2001 to create the series
current format.
Annually
the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series provides the
nation’s top collegiate coaches with the premier stage to
identify and scout the most coveted players in the country. In
2004, over 500 coaches attended the US Youth Soccer Regional
Championships including the majority of the top 25 men’s and
women’s programs based on the final 2004 NSCAA/adidas National
Rankings for NCAA Division I schools.
