Second Evening of Play at the US Youth Soccer National Championships Concludes

2004 National Champion Eclipse Select (IL) Remain in Hunt (Under-17)
PDA Fury (NJ) Only Girls Team to Secure Slot in Championship Final (Under-16)

ORLANDO, FL (July 28, 2005) – The US Youth Soccer National Championships continued Thursday evening with the second night of Preliminary Round play at Disney’s Wide World of Sports Complex.  Each team played its second of three preliminary round games looking to add another tally in their win column.  The two teams with the most points at the conclusion of Friday’s play will advance to Sunday’s National Championship Finals.

Tonight was an evening of dramatics in the Under-17 girls division. The Eclipse Select (IL), 2004 National Champions, tied a talented CASL Spartan Elite (NC) team, 1-1. Coming out of the scoreless first half CASL’s Casey Nogueira found the back of the net in the 81st in what was believed to be the go-ahead goal after the ball slipped through the Eclipse keeper’s hands.  The experienced Eclipse side kept hope alive pressuring CASL’s defense ultimately earning a penalty kick, after a foul in the box. Lauren Switzer, U.S. Under-17 national team member and a verbal commitment to UCLA, made the most of her opportunity and tied the score at 1-1.  CASL and Eclipse remain tied atop the current standings.

“The four best soccer teams in this age group are here (Nationals),” said CASL Coach Jay Howell. “If we didn’t give 110%, then we couldn’t beat the Eclipse.  It was a great match.”

“(North Carolina-bound) Betsy Frederick, Morvin Ross and our keeper Molly Baird, who has only allowed one goal (on the penalty kick) continues to work tirelessly,” said Howell crediting his talented team. “We play the Slammers FC (CA) tomorrow, they’re big-time and we’re coming out to play.”

Also in Under-17 girls play, the PDA Wildcats (NJ) bounced back from yesterday’s 3-0 loss at the hands of CASL Spartan Elite to defeat the Slammers FC (CA), 2-0. Gina DeMaio put her side up in the 59th on a penalty kick and teammate Elisabeth Redmond (PDA) added another in the 78th.

PDA Wildcats coach Tom Anderson said, “We love to play the Slammers and I loved the way we were playing tonight but everything regarding Sunday is still up in the air.”

Play resumes Friday at 7:30am.  At the conclusion of tonight’s play only five of the twelve boys championship finals have been decided and one on the girls.

The 2005 US Youth Soccer National Championship Series, providing approximately 129,000 players on 7,200 teams from US Youth Soccer’s 55 State Associations the opportunity to showcase their soccer skills against the best competition in the nation while emphasizing teamwork, discipline and fair play, is the country’s most prestigious national youth soccer tournament.  The US Youth Soccer National Championships cap a yearlong series of competitions for boys and girls teams in multiple age brackets.

2005 marks a special year for the four teams in the Under-19 Boys age group at the US Youth Soccer National Championship as the National Champion will hoist the James P. McGuire Cup, the oldest trophy in youth sport dating back to 1935 with the inaugural youth championships, on the 70th anniversary of the storied cup. This year also marks the 25th anniversary of the Under-19 Girls Ross Stewart Cup and 20th Anniversary of the Under-16 Girls Patricia L. Masotto Cup. The U.S. Soccer Federation initiated youth championships with the James P. McGuire Cup (Under-19 Boys) in 1935. Since its creation in 1974, US Youth Soccer has added 11 divisions to the National Championship tournament, most recently with the Under-14 and Under-15 Boys and Girls divisions in 2001 to create the series current format.

Annually the US Youth Soccer National Championship Series provides the nation’s top collegiate coaches with the premier stage to identify and scout the most coveted players in the country. In 2004, over 500 coaches attended the US Youth Soccer Regional Championships including the majority of the top 25 men’s and women’s programs based on the final 2004 NSCAA/adidas National Rankings for NCAA Division I schools.
