Underway at the US Youth Soccer National Championships |
ORLANDO, FL (July 22, 2004) - The US Youth Soccer National Championships continued
today at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex with morning matches in the Under-14 and
Under-19 groups.
The Camarillo Eagles (Cal-South), together since they played Under-10, secured a spot
in the Under-14 Girls National Championship with a 4-0 win over Mt. Laurel United Strikers
(New Jersey).
"They want it, they're hungry and focused," said Eagles Head Coach Vince
Thomas. "We knew if we got four goals today, that we would be in the championship
game - and they responded. We have tremendous team unity and our leaders pull the team
together at the most critical moments."
In Under-14 Boys action, California South's Celtic Harps scored four straight goals to
rally from a one-goal deficit against the Tampa Bay Kickers (Florida). The Celtics tied
the match just after halftime with a goal at 41:00. The go-ahead goal came at 52:00 when
the Celtic offense got off a quick shot from the right side of the box and followed the
rebound off of the Tampa Bay keeper. The Celtics did not let up, playing with what Head
Coach Matthew McDonagh characterized as relentless offense, scoring twice more before the
final whistle.
"Four straight goals was something I had not anticipated, but they wore the hoops
of pride today," added McDonagh.
The Rockford Raptors (Illinois) Under-14 Boys team won their first game at the US Youth
Soccer National Championships this morning by a score of 3-2, over the Hockessin Blizzard
of Delaware.
Down 1-0 at halftime, the Raptors scored three goals in a seven-minute span - goals
were scored in the 41st, 45th and 48th minutes - to build a comfortable two-goal lead. The
Blizzard scored at the 66-minute mark, closing the gap, but the Raptor defense proved to
be to strong in the final minutes of the game.
The GSA '85 Phoenix Red (Georgia) downed the HBC Fury (Eastern New York) 2-1 in
Under-19 Girls play this morning. GSA, who took home the 2001 US Youth Soccer National
Champions as Under-16's, now has 6 points going into the final day of preliminary action.
On the Under-19 Boys side, Missouri's Scott Gallagher took out the Baltimore Bays
(Maryland) 2-1 and also move into Friday's match with 6 points. Scott Gallagher is a
three-time Missouri State Champion, but this is their first US Youth Soccer National
Championship appearance.
Play resumes this evening at 6:30 pm with matches in the Under-15 division.
